This book addresses the cultural and artistic connections between al-Andalus and Egypt from diverse and multidisciplinary points of view. The works of art studied here, architecture, epigraphy and sumptuous arts (ceramics, astrolabes, ivories, metals, fabrics or glass), show a rich panorama of exchanges, references and multiple identities built over centuries in the shore of the Mediterranean. The extraordinary collection of luxury goods of Egyptian origin preserved in the Peninsula is hardly comprehensible without taking into account that shared cultural context, now forgotten. Often historiography has focused on aspects such as the rivalry between the Umayyad and the Fatimid caliphates, thus favoring a partial view where al-Andalus seems to follow or react to external influences. In this volume we analyze works of several chronologies, with particular emphasis on a period so far less studied, the 13th to 15th centuries, which reveal the creative originality and ideological models used in al-Andalus, as well as the importance of symbolic referents of the Ayyubid and Mamluk Egypt.
