Durante los siglos posteriores a la desaparición del Imperio Romano, sobrevino un complejo período de fragmentación política. Durante los siglos V al XI, la caída y auge de nuevos reinos en el Mediterráneo occidental necesitó de variados mecanismos de legitimación para implantar su dominio sobre otras comunidades. Para ello, esgrimieron diferentes estrategias adaptadas a las necesidades de cada realidad geográfica y territorial con el fin de presentar a los diversos gobernantes como herederos de un orden antiguo, dentro de una concepción teleológica y providencialista de la Historia.
During the centuries that followed the disappearance of the Roman Empire, it came up a complex period of political fragmentation. During the 5th to 11th centuries, the fall and rise of new kingdoms in the Western Mediterranean needed varied legitimation mechanisms to establish their dominance over other communities. For it, they argued different strategies adapted to the necessity of each geographical and territorial realities with the purpose of present the diverse rulers as heirs of an ancient order, within a teleological and providential conception of History.
